Increasing subsea cable reliability for offshore renewable energy applications
Investment in offshore renewable energy is growing globally and for every wind turbine, tidal generator or wave hub there must be an accompanying subsea power cable to ensure the electricity reaches the grid. Maintaining reliability of the cables and minimising downtime is key to ensuring that energy continues to flow when and to where it is needed. The majority of insurance claims are cable-related, so the concerns with subsea cabling in the renewable industry are familiar. However, up until now there has been limited investment in the development of innovative solutions to common cable issues, and poor reliability has been damaging the reputation of renewable power. This needs to change as we aim to depend more and more on renewable sources for our energy needs.
This paper highlights some of the common offshore cabling issues that have been prevalent in recent years, and discusses some of the innovative ideas that have been developed which attempt to reduce costs and improve operability of offshore renewable energy generation.
